Civil Society Spotlight Report of SDGs of Nepal Launched

On behalf of civil society Major Groups and Stakeholder, the SDGs National Network Nepal launched the “Nepal Civil Society Spotlight Report of SDGs” on 13 July 2020 by organizing a virtual program. The report was formally launched by Hon. Ms. Taradevi Bhatta, Chairperson of Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee of National Assembly.

SDGs National Network Nepal, an open and independent civil society platform, had coordinated the Voluntary Peoples Review of SDGs (VPR 2020) that aimed to review the progresses and achievements made by the country on the 2030 Agenda, through peoples’ perspectives. The theme of the VPR 2020 was “Amplifying Voices of the People: Closing the Gaps of SDGs”.

Moreover, VPR 2020 aimed to facilitate the sharing of experiences, including successes, challenges and lessons learned, with a view to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

During the event, Mr. Daya Sagar Shrestha overviewed the VPR 2020 process and its objectives. Mr. PratimaGurung highlighted the key assessment of the SDGs progresses, achievements, gaps and call for actions. Mr. Iswori Prasad BK informed about the contributors and participating organizations. Prominent civil society activist and media freedom advocate Mr. TaranathDahal spoke about national context of SDGs, whereas Human Rights Advocate Dr. Gopal Krishna Siwakotipresented his thoughts that how changing global landscape is impacting on SDGs in the country.

Representative of UNRCMr. Subash Nepali informed how UNs is supporting SDGs in the country. Hon. Mr. Govinda Sharma Poudel, member of National Human Rights Commission highlighted how human rights based approach is important for SDGs implementation.

The VPR 2020 was purely a voluntary and spontaneousinitiative of civil society Major Groups and stakeholders including representative of women, youth, children, Dalits, Indigenous Peoples, Madhesi, LGBTIQ, Trade Unions etc.

38 civil society organizations directly contributed in thematic reviews, whereas more than 152CSOs including national federations, networks, alliances and coalition have actively participated in the VPR 2020 process.

The VPR 2020 process received support and guidance from civil society leaders, human rights activists, environmentalists, sustainable development campaigners, which were overwhelmingly inspiring and motivating. This VPR process intensively reached to poor, marginalized, vulnerable and people living in risks. Further, the process could receive full cooperation from Governments, Parliament, Constitutional Bodies, UN Agencies, Multinational Development Banks, INGOs, Local Government Associations, Think-Tanks, Academic Society, Business Society, Development Activists, prominent human rights activists.
