16 August 2024, Kathmandu. Civil society major groups and stakeholder groups (MGOS) organized a discussion program to review the High-Level Political Forum of the SDGs, which was held on 8-17 July 2024 at UNHQ in New York. This year Nepal has participated in the 3rd Voluntary National Review of the SDGs (VNR) and prepared the country progress report. According to the UN, 36 countries have presented VNR reports. Around one thousand MGOS and CSOs and 90 high level government representatives were present in the HLPF that reviewed the 5 Goals including Goal 1, Goal 2, Goal 13, Goal 16 and Goal 17. During the review program Nepal CSOs’ delegates shared the feelings and experiences of the HLPF. The participants also discussed the challenges of the VNR process and they also shared the constraints to participate in the HLPF. The program emphasized on the follow-up actions after the VNR and CSOs should monitor the progress of recommendations highlighted on the CSOs’ collective statements delivered in past three VNRs and to take actions to overcome the structural barriers of key development issues such as various forms of inequalities. Further, participants also flagged on the shrinking civil society spaces in the Government and UN processes. The program identified some key actions as way forward such as participation in the upcoming Summit of the Future and South Asia level Forums The review program was organized by the SDGs National Network Nepal in partnership with Society for International Law and Public Policy, National Campaign for Sustainable Development Nepal, Asia Pacific Regional Engagement Mechanism and Action for Sustainable Development, where high level officers of National Planning Commission and National Human Rights Commission were present.
